It’s a few months later, and the Magic Keyboard has undoubtedly changed the way I use the iPad. But why does the Magic Keyboard even exist? Who is it for, and why do you need one?
In the video above, I have an in-depth look at the Magic Keyboard and why I think this is one of Apple’s strangest products to date.
What is the Magic Keyboard?
It’s a heavy product. It almost doubles the weight of your iPad to weigh nearly as much as a MacBook Air. It’s more of a dock for your iPad than a case as you can charge the iPad via USB C power pass-through by connecting the mains to the extra USB C port on the side of the keyboard.
It is by far the best typing experience on the iPad.
The iPad/keyboard combo is not very stable when you’re using it on your lap as all the weight is in the top part of the device, which means it can tip over backwards when you’re watching movies in bed. It seems as though Apple designed the Magic Keyboard for desk use primarily.
The Magic Keyboard is also one of Apple’s most beautiful products. The backlit keys and floating design is fantastic.

Why did Apple make the Magic Keyboard for the iPad?
When Apple launched the iPad, it was supposed to be the in-between device that is better than a phone at some things and slightly worse at doing laptop things.

Steve Jobs presented a slide with the iPad positioned between the phone and the laptop to illustrate this point.
But over time users have decided that the Mac is too complicated, expensive and cumbersome to use and a lot of people have chosen to make the iPad their primary device.
